Welcome To My Blog

Thanks for checking the blog out... Hope it offers something a bit different every now & again. Though I come from a pseudo - Mod background (Soul & Ska in particular), I have a diverse taste in music & hope my varied posts will reflect this.

Cheers Skamanc .... I'm not after your undying gratitude, but please leave your thoughts, comments & opinions on the posts & content. I regularly up- & download material, plus buy and trade items. As such, if I have inadvertently "trodden on anyone's toes" in posting anything then please let me know & accept my apologies. Also please support the artists involved & remember that the blog is merely a pointer toward these various downloads, which are stored elsewhere. Legally, any downloads should not be retained for more than a week. So now I've told you the legal bit !

SKAMANC'S NOVEMBER RAFFLE

Well, it's that time of the month again... when by tradition Mrs Skamanc ignores the Virgin telephone Bill, so the Broadband (which I pay her for) is cut off again.

This, in turn, severely curtails the amount & quality of Broadband I receive (Plan B = a Tmobile dongle, that is, frankly, shite), and, as a result, limits my up and downloading capabilities. I go to the public library when possible, but : (a) Its closed at 4am on a Sunday morning, which, by sods law, is usually the time I enter a marathon spell of working & (b) A lot of uploading sites are forbidden by their server.

Without wishing to moan, even the Broadband payment is difficult, as I'm self-financing my Tech College Auto Electrics Course via E-bay sales (easier said than done), and I've reeived no benefits since July due to a wrangle over the Mrs' part-time earnings. (She's a test pilot in a broomstick factory lol).
As a result, I'm planning a fund raising raffle for the forthcoming month - the raffle will run through November & prizes distributed early December.

"Tickets" will be £1 each, and prizes will include a selection of music books, CDs and bootleg DVD's (I have a huge collection of 2Tone / related stuff etc).

Anyone interested can send a pound via the Paypal "donate" button (located just above the Visitors Web Counter) - please include your name & address details in case you win. As stated, I'll ship prizes out early December, and will post a full list of lucky winners. Anyone wishing to remain private / anonymous should let me know with their contact information.

As always, anything raised over the required running costs will be donated to the "Help For Heroes" charity in the UK, which assists disabled / injured current & ex service personnel.

Thanks & good luck...

PS If anyone can rcommend a decent Broadband service that I can  get without a mandatory phoneline then please give me a shout.

MILES DAVIS : Bitches Brew

Miles Davis' masterpiece. Don't let the terms "Jazz" or "Fusion" put you off - give it a go & I'd be very interested to read any comments & opinions. If there's sufficient interest, I can post a bootleg called "Deep Brew" - 2x cd's worth of out-takes, rehearsal tracks & the like from the recording sessions.

                                                                   Hotfile

My version of the file is the 1970 double LP as released. The version here features several bonus tracks / single edits. Now... do I try to find an mp3 version of "Deep Brew" or spend the rest of my life converting my flac version to MP3....hmmmmm?!?!?!?!?

MAGAZINE : Lynn, Massachusetts, 10/8/80

Dedicated to their late guitarist John McGeoch.
Back to one of my favourite artists & outfits tonight - the living genius that is Howard Devoto with Magazine. Bootleg recording from the States, August 1980. More Magazine to follow. As always, respect & thanks to the original artists & bootleggers.
For Ian, Pete, Kev, Mike & Mo - my muckers over @ Manchester College Automotive Department.

SUBWAY SECT : 1978 NOW

SUBWAY SECT & THE SLITS : Live 1977

Very interesting file that's been sitting on a cd for a while...here's Subway Sect live in Paris April 77, The Slits from Erics, Liverpool (also 1977) and the two acts together at The California Ballroom, Dunstable, with a version of the Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray". (Also played live by Joy Division - see "Still" post).

I'm in danger of heading for another 20+ hour day - as such, I'm making Friday's post a couple of hours early. This is dedicated to The Slits' Ari Up who, I've just found out, died yesterday.

THE JAM : Extras

VIC GODDARD : T.R.O.U.B.L.E (1986)

Further thanks to Jimmy for this album...

Recorded in 1982 and released in '86, this sees the ever inventive Vic try yet another musical style. Download, have a listen & let Jimmy know what you think.

THE JAM SNAP! LIVE E.P.

Hands up who's still got their freebie live EP from the earliest pressing of Snap ? I have... it was the only reason I skinned myself to buy the double album. A great addition to the Jam collection, as three of the four tracks remain unreleased in any other form.
(Only "Move On Up" was released post-split on a live compilation). ".. Depression" was never a fave of mine, though there is a great version of the beautiful Marriott -Lane track "Get Yourself Together" and what remains one of my Jam highlights all these years later "But I'm Different Now". Download to safeguard your vinyl rarity or to marvel for the 1st time...both cool with me !!

THE SMITHS : Rock Garden, London, 1983.

Thanks to Martin for this early 1983 bootleg.

VIC GODDARD & SUBWAY SECT : Songs For Sale (1982)

For Jimmy, with thanks !
Abrupt change of direction for Vic & The Sect with this 1982 album, seeing them veer into swing / crooner territory. The title itself came from a Cole Porter track called "Love For Sale" which is covered on the record... still an important releaase in the Goddard canon and an essential addition to the collection.
Thanks again to Jimmy who came up with the files after searching for so long!

THE CLASH : Asbury Park, New Jersey, 31/5/82

Thanks to Martin Smith for his latest Clash file. This is a recording from the Asbury Park (Springsteen territory) Convention Hall, New Jersey, 31/5/82. Artwork / tracklisting is included.

Skamanc's Top Ten Downloads for 2010

While twiddling my thumbs this evening I had a flip through the "most downloaded" file in Rapidshare. The following are the most downloaded files from this blog over the last 9 months or so...

(1) Portishead : Third (2) Brian Wilson : Smile
(3) Beck : Odelay (4) The Kinks : Something Else By The Kinks
(5) The King Blues : Save The World (6) Paul Weller : Illumination
(7) The Cure : 17 Seconds (8) Dr Feelgood : Stupidity
(9) Teenage Fanclub & Jad Fair : Songs of Wisdom and Hope
(10) Jefferson Airplane : Volunteers.

So there we have it - think this illustrates the variety of sounds we appreciate. Some surprises & a few certs, eg Weller & The Kinks making it in there. Delighted Beck made it : "Odelay" is a masterpiece, likewise The Fannies album. I was also chuffed to see the Feelgoods in the top ten...

SUBWAY SECT : Live, Guildford May 1977

Here's a short live recording of Subway Sect from Guildford Civic Hall, May the 1st, '77.

THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO : Sceptre Studios Acetate 1966

Rare acetate from 1966 featuring demo tracks that were later released as "The Velvet Underground and Nico" (1967. Crackly sound quality but an invaluable rock relic...
