Sincere thanks to Phil for this cracker, recorded in Liverpool, 1988 by the reformed Deaf School. There have been a few technical issues related to posting this, & Phil has gone above and beyond the call of duty to get it to the blog. As such, I trust there will be a few comments for him - there must be more fans out there other than Phil, Geoff & myself !

This has more than a few links with the fabled Stiff Records - Suggs, Clive Langer & the legendary Nick Lowe - he should have been on the list of bass players recently named in the c-box discussion.

Fender 1951 Telecaster / "P" Bass

Firstly, can Itake this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy New Year for 2012, and also say "thanks" foor all the comments, messaegs and e-mails. Another year older... if not wiser !!

I had a great run - up to Xmas, selling various data and technical manuals for cars. Some of the proceeds were invested in this Bass, which I've been after for ages.

A bit of a hybrid really, as its based on a 1951 Telecaster / "P" Bass (early Precision), though has a 1957 Precision pick up. The body is a slab (no contours), and the scratchplate again from a '51, like the control panel. The neck / head is Telecaster, and the bridge cover / ashtray is again from a '51. The finishing touch is a period "Fender Telecaster Bass" decal to the headstock...

Although its only about 12 months old, the Tele has been carefully reliced to look as though it has years on the clock... acid etched hardware, missing paintwork and a few dinks in the paintjob. The guy who reliced the bass does them to order, so you can specify how worn or not it looks when completed...

He was also working on a very nice 1970 Precision replica (with the neck humbucker) which I was briefly tempted by before re-deciding on the tele...

Fender's Custom Shop will do this kind of thing to order, though they charge several thousand US $ for the privilege.... This loks the part, plays like a dream and has a real punchy tone. Plus it cost a fraction of what I might have paid...

If there's enough guitar / bass minded people out there, then I'd welcome some posts on the topic... pics & descriptions can be sent via the usual e-mail address & I'll post them up periodically.

Massive thanks to Gary (S Manchester) for very kindly sending me a cd of his original Double LP of this gig from late in the career of The Jam. This was a "fan club" released bootleg from late 1982 / early '83 and goes these day for upwards of £90! I've added the (correct) track listings, so all you need to do is download the file & get listening.

This is one file with separated, annotated tracks, though for the completist / anorak, the original playing order is as follows :

As regular visitors are aware, I fuckin' love The Prisoners. As such, it was with great surprise that I came across this gem (not literally, though almost... fnarr fnarr !) whilst conducting some youtube research earlier this evening.

Exact date & venue unknown... previous youtubers reckon it's from Water Rats and may be '83 due to the material played. In between tracks Day mentions a "new single" ... "Hurricane", so there you go... 1983.

I treasure the fact thay I saw these lads, both originally AND after they reformed... please remember that "new" Prisoners & related bootlegs are always welcome on the blog... e-mail address in blurb @ the top of the blog.

Great compilation of all the surviving tracks cut by The Wilde Flowers between 1965 & '69, though most apparently date from 65 - 6. Chiefly remembered these days for including various members of Soft Machine & Caravan as well as other players from the Canterbury prog scene.

A mixture of period R&B with burgeoning psychadelia... freakbeat really.

DOT DASH : "Spark Flame Ember Ash" (2011) CD Review

As I may have stated (numerous times before), one of the joys of blogging is the promo material one receives. This hidden gem arrived yesterday - the debut CD by Dot Dash, a Washington DC outfit who describe themself as "post punk".

For the record, I like them, down to their "Wire" (UK New Wave) derived moniker. Nothing over ambitious, just 14 well written, crafted and performed songs, from the pen of guitarist / vocalist Terry Banks.

I have been playing this in the Van on my travels today, and the same question keeps recurring - is the mid / low fi sound purposeful, or should they be looking for a new producer ? The vocal seem half buried and this is such a pity, as there is a great album fighting to get out.

I also greatly admire the fact that they're trying to make their own way and haven't fallen into the trap of derivation, as have so many others. The four members have a decent musical pedigree between them, including Swervedriver & Modest Proposal. (The latter were my fave US based Mod outfit after The Mod Fun, from Hoboken, NJ, as I recall..). Similarly, their influences are impeccable - almost made for this blog then.

The CD has recently been released by Canadian indie The Beautiful Music (web url below), and is also available for download via iTunes, eMusic & Amazon.

As a taster, there are a couple of tracks below (with the blessing of the band) - have a listen & judge for yourselves.

I look forward to new material from the lads - just have a quiet word or two with the producer !

PS an upcoming date of interest to US visitors will be @ the DC9 in Washington, Nov 28th, supporting blog fave The Chameleons. Give my regards to Burgess !

Dot Dash is a post punk pop band from Washington D.C.

spark>flame>ember>ash is their long-playing debut. It contains 14 songs and was recorded in three afternoons.

If this bio had one of those “RIYL/Recommended If You Like” sections, it might drop names like The Jam, Joy Division and The Byrds…

… Or perhaps it would bring up an apparent appreciation by Dot Dash for the ancient sounds of the Postcard, Whaam and early Creation labels…

But those kinds of judgments can really only be made by you, the listener.

As is often the case, Dot Dash has a whole “they are ex-members of” thing going on:

Guitarist/singer Terry Banks and bassist Hunter Bennett were in punky power poppers Julie Ocean.

Before that, Terry was in a bunch of jangly guitar bands, including The Saturday People, Tree Fort Angst, Glo-Worm, and St. Christopher.

Guitarist Bill Crandall was in the mod/pop band Modest Proposal.

Drummer Danny Ingram began musical life in Dischord-label punks Youth Brigade before moving on to Strange Boutique and, later, U.K. guitar-wranglers Swervedriver.

Dot Dash plays shows, mostly around D.C., but occasionally out of town, whenever they can. In the recent past they’ve opened for Urge Overkill, The Godfathers, The Trash Can Sinatras, and The Capstan Shafts, among others.

So that’s it: 14 songs, recorded expeditiously, and released by The Beautiful Music. You be the judge.

Bit of a Ronnie Wood theme recently, with the Faces & Jeff Beck posts... here's a great compilation of his first outfit, West London's "The Birds", rounding up all their surviving material. I bet there's a dusty old reel to reel live tape out there in a shed or attic but until I come across it, then this'll have to do.

I love this UK R&B / early Freakbeat sound - this is a repost from a while back but was originally on a multi artist post. Here in all its glory is the new sharecode plus a clip from youtube.

Woody has become a bit of a tabloid icon / "dirty old man" character in the UK of late, though I think he is still a top geezer and a total musical legend. I don't actually think it's hyperbolic to suggest he is a National Treasure... I've recently re-read his excellent autobiography & this is highly recommended to all...

Can anyone recommend a decent, reliable & FREE(!) alternative to Rapidshare ?

I have around 1000 files on there though think it's time for a proper alternative. Some recent uploads have disappeared from there & its a pain in the arse tohave to re-do them.

I also know that a lot of blog visitors have had problems accessing files via rapidshare on occasion.

As such, I need to find a new provider that I can completely rely on. I've tried several in the past, though files seem to be taken off very quickly.

Any thoughts and recommendations would be very welcome... Thanks.

AUTUMN / FALL CHARITY RAFFLE

Regular visitors will be aware that the blog's main charity is "Help For Heroes", which supports wounded & injured Services personnel. This time the raffle will not only be donating to that admirable charity, but also to Wythenshawe Town FC.

The club are currently looking for local sponsors, as well as other donations. It will cost in the region of a shade under £1000 to equip the various kids' teams with home & away kits, plus training gear etc.

As my son plays Centre Half in the Under 7's, I'd like to try and help out. As such, I'm flogging raffle tickets at just a pound (£1) each, which can be bought via the blog Paypal "donate" link. (Please ensure you include your name & address for when the tickets are pulled out of the hat, well, large coffee tin actually!).

Prizes will include various music books of interest to blog visitors, including Pauline Black's recent autobiography, a Suggs / London book, plus various other titles, as well as CD's that have been posted over the months and a few DVD copies of "Dance Craze", plus some more surprises. I'll leave the raffle running for a bit & see how much we can raise.

Every donation / ticket sold will be welcome... The blog is, on average, attracting 2500 separate hits every day - if just one day's visitors bought a £1 ticket each, then we could equip the kids' team in full, plus send around £1,500 to the Services charity.

I'll obviously keep the readership up to date with funds raised & a list of winners will be posted in due course. I've got the ball rolling with £50 from my paypal / e-bay activities (no prizes for me - obviously!!)

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD : In London (Lost British Recordings)

A real classic here.... This compiles tracks from approx 1968 - 1971 that were released in the UK on the Phillips Label, though never made it over the Pond, as Dusty had signed to Atlantic (in 1968) and contractual problems stopped the licensing of the Phillips tracks in the States. I've spent several hours putting the tracks together from various sources and it was well worth the effort.

As always, comments are more than welcome.

All Change on the Job Front

Thanks to everyone who's recently mailed me congratulations on finding a job after 2 1/2 years jobless... It'd take ages replying individually so...

The old adage that its easier to find work when you're in a Job is true... 5 weeks into my current post, I've just been offered a permament Auto Electrician post with a large HGV Coachbuilding Firm just 4 miles from home. The money is approx 4x more than I'm on here, before overtime !! Obviously I've accepted, so from August, I'll have a lot less time for the blog. This will be continuing obviously, but I'll welcome more contributions to save my limited freetime.

To say I'm chuffed is an understatement - better money, less travel time & diesel used plus its my actual trade. I'm told they're a great firm to work for, though dead hard to get into, so that's a reflection on my electrical skills I reckon... Big, long term contracts (Royal Mail, Hovis, Argos, Morrisons trucks etc), loads of overtime & great money so I'm happy for once...

Firstly thanks to our very Herr Pauli for the link plus the c-box tips on actually downloading the thing. Thanks also to my employers, as I did the download on their cpmputer in worktime , lol !!

Deep Joy is actually a pretty good title as it accurately describes my feelings on having the tracks safely stashed on the hard drive. I've alreadygot all the TV footage that the bulk of this sudio collection comes from, though the 1968 Top Gear session with PP Arnold is a massive bonus. (In fact I have all the surviving Small Faces footage, period). Pretty decent cover too, based on the pic sleeve for "Tin Soldier".

This is now in one file, each track individually laid out, and spelling mistakes corrected. The artwork is also included, so get downloading. I admit its a blatant steal from another site, but its happened numerous times to me in the past...

Sadly Mike Doyle passed away yesterday of liver failure. 1976 League Cup Winning Captain and key member of the all conquering late 60s City team, Doyle scored 32 goals in 448 City games, and was capped by England five times.

I saw Tony Book (69 Captain, later Manager & current Club President... bottom pic holding the Cup...) by Sale Tesco yesterday morning. A genuine unspoken moment - he spotted my shirt, beamed & we shook hands.

Special mention for the late Neil Young (goalscorer from 1969).

Also for Ska Fan Cheryl Parker - who is singlehandedly keeping the City flame going in North Carolina.
